During the cold season, you only need to take simple steps to make your home more energy-efficient and, in turn, consume better.
Identify air leaks
Warm air leaks and cold air infiltration account for up to 25% of a home's heat loss.
- Caulk drafty windows and doors and install weatherstripping.
- Periodically check the condition of the weatherstripping. They prevent air infiltration and keep heat inside.
- Install outlet gaskets or foam pads between the plate and the box of electrical outlets and switches to reduce heat loss through exterior walls.
- Also seal around pipes and ventilation duct outlets.
Heat efficiently
Replace mechanical thermostats with electronic programmable models; you could save up to 10% on your heating costs.
Primary tips
- Lowering the set temperature by just one degree Celsius could reduce your heating costs by 5 to 7%.
- Do not unnecessarily heat unoccupied rooms.
- Lower the set temperature in unoccupied rooms and make sure to close the doors.
Secondary tips
- Dust your baseboard heaters and warm air outlets.
- Avoid placing furniture in front of a heat source.
- If you heat your home using a central system or electric baseboards, get smart thermostats; they will automatically adjust your home's temperature based on your consumption habits.
Final tips
- If you have a garage, take care not to overheat it.
- Let the sun enter through windows on the sunny side and close the curtains or blinds on windows not exposed to the sun.
- Close all curtains and blinds in the evening.
